PATRICK SHEEHY
When Timothy Sheehy married Anne Deasy on 31 January 1864, his father is named on the civil certificate as Patrick Deasy of Ballintemple. There are marriage records for three men named Patrick Deasy within the time constraints of him having a son of marriageable age and within the four parishes of Ardfield and Rathbarry, Barryroe (Lislee), Clonakilty (Darrara) and Timoleague. These are in Church records only because civil registration only came into force in 1864, the year his son, Timothy, married.
There is no church birth record at all in the parishes of Barryroe (Lislee), Clonakilty (Darrara) or Timoleague for a Timothy Sheehy within the time constraints, having searched for ten years either side of the likely date of his birth, given that the marriage certificate states he was 28 years of age.
It is possible that the priest recording the groom’s father’s name entered it incorrectly, bearing in mind that the marriage was taking place in the bride’s parish not the groom’s.
Unfortunately, I think all avenues of enquiry have been exhausted and it will not be possible to establish who Timothy Sheehy or his parents were.
Timothy Sheehy (1)
Timothy Sheehy (1), son of Patrick Sheehy (Ballintemple) married Anne Deasy (Lehina) married Timothy Sheehy on 21 January, 1864.
The civil marriage certificate states that the groom was 28 years of age. That would give a birth year of 1836. The bride, Anne Deasy is stated to be 24 years of age, which would give a birth year of 1840.
Having searched the parish records of Barryroe (Lislee), Timoleague, Clonakilty (Darrara) and Rathbarry, no entry for a Timothy Sheehy has been found between the years 1820 to 1845. As he married in 1864, this would seem to be a reasonable search. Civil registration had not come into force at this time and it appears that for some reason unknown, Timothy’s baptism was not registered.
Timothy Sheehy (1) died on 29 January, 1893. On his death certificate his age is given as 54 years of age, which would give him a birth year of 1839. This is a three year discrepancy from that given on his marriage certificate. His wife, Anne, was present when Timothy died of T.B. They lived at Templebryan, Clonakilty, at the time of his death. He was described as a labourer. This may be significant as he was described as a farmer on his marriage certificate, a dairyman on the birth certificates of his first six children and a farmer on that of his seventh child. This may suggest uncertainty in his social status and may (I stress may) explain how is son Maurice and daughter Minnie were included on a list of persons who lodged applications with the Estates Commissioners as the representatives of an evicted tenant.
This theory is, I believe, supported by the fact that over the period when the couple’s seven children were born, Timothy and Anne Sheehy lived at six different locations, Ballymacowen, Chapel Street (Clonakilty), Ballinroher, Lehinagh (Lehina), Carrigrour (Desert) and Ballintemple. This constant change of address would appear to be an indication of the uncertainty of tenure under which Timothy Sheehy (1) laboured to support a large family.

John Sheehy emigrated from Ireland to England. In the 1901 Census he was living at Farleigh Court Cottages, Farleigh, Farley, Godstone, Surrey, England. The house was occupied by a family named Sivier, husband (a shepherd), wife, five children, a sister and three boarders. John Sheehy is one of the boarders. He was described as ‘labourer on farm’, born in Cork, Ireland and single.
John Sheehy, described as a general labourer, married Annie Ferguson on 8 May 1901 at Godstone, Surrey.
They were married in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Caterham. (There was a large army barracks at Caterham which may have been significant in John Sheehy’s life in the future) His address is given as Farleigh Cottages, Farleigh and his bride’s address is given as Fairchildes, Chelsham. Annie Ferguson’s father, John was a Farm Labourer.
By the time of the 1911 Census, John’s address was Chelsam Common, Whyteleafe, Surrey, Chelsham, Surrey, England. John Sheehy described himself as a farm labourer and gave his birthplace as Barryroe, Co. Cork. He gave his birth year as 1875 (in fact it was 1873). His wife, Annie Sheehy (nee Ferguson), was born in Addington, Surrey in 1874. The couple had three children listed; Patrick John, born in 1904 at Cudham in Kent, Kathleen Mary born in 1908 in Chelsham, Surrey and Maurice born in 1911 also at Chelsham.
John Sheehy enlisted in the British Army at Whitehall, Middlesex and gave his address as Warlingham, Surrey. He first served in the Royal Engineers with the service number 295029. Historically, British infantry regiments maintained small units of pioneers for heavy work and engineering, especially for clearing paths through forests and for leading assaults on fortifications.
